Title: Equality & Diversity in Outreach and why it matters
The SKA is an international effort to build the worldÕs largest radio telescope, led by SKA Organisation (SKAO) based near Manchester, UK. Already supported by 13 national members spanning the globe, SKAO is bringing together over 1,000 scientists, engineers and policymakers to design and develop the SKA.
The SKA project was born global, stemming from discussions between various groups in the early 90s. Today Diversity is one the core values of the project Ð inscribed in the founding treaty of the SKA Observatory Ð with partners including American, European, Pacific and BRICS countries and 16 nationalities already represented at the SKA HQ.
SKAOÕs Communications team plays a central role in supporting the strategic objectives of the organisation and sharing its values with internal and external stakeholders, with diversity considered a top priority.
From internal work to social media & outreach events, in this talk, we present some of the initiatives and opportunities led by Communications to promote EDI values inside and outside the project and make sure the project is aligned with societal changes. We hope some of these initiatives may inspire other international, diverse organisations, and we welcome input from participants on the work conducted by their own institutes that we could learn from.
