Project Diversity@NAOJ: The 1st Talk

Date and time: June 4, 2018, 12:00 – 13:00

Speaker: Hannah Harris
(Leiden University, IAU Office for Astronomy Outreach (OAO) Visitor)

Title: Diversity, Bias, and Equity in Astronomy

Language: English

Abstract:
Increasing diversity, combating bias, and improving equity in astronomy is both the focus of much international discussion and research and a strategic goal of the IAU. When workplaces are diverse and equitable, everything – from employee safety and wellbeing to the core scientific research being conducted – is strengthened. Improving diversity within research institutions aids in inspiring future scientists and increase the relevance of astronomy in the lives of the public. Diverse research teams produce higher quality and more efficient work, and astronomy benefits from the sum of all human perspectives. This talk will summarize the major findings in research on diversity in the (American) workplace, including the failings and criticisms of traditional diversity training and the potential for new strategies that focus on implicit bias. Lastly, I will discuss best practices and lessons learned from my own extensive work with diverse groups of women and men, from American students and professional European astronomers to refugees in Greece.
